Overview
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to expand the reach and enhance the quality of technical education in the country. The Institute was also given the status of an autonomous University. From this modest start in 1950, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in a steady process of development in the vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants.IIT Kharagpur, the oldest, largest and the most diversified of all IITs, has a rich history of excellence created over more than 60 years of its existence. Admissions
Admission to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech programs is primarily based on the candidate's performance in the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced). Candidates must first qualify the JEE Main examination to be eligible for JEE Advanced. Post clearing JEE Advanced, candidates participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process, where they can select IIT Kharagpur as their preferred institution. The final seat allocation considers the candidate's rank, preferences, and availability of seats. For M.Tech admissions, candidates need a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score, followed by participation in the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) rounds. M.Sc. admissions are based on the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) scores. Ph.D. admissions require a master's degree in a relevant field, and candidates may need to appear for an interview or written test conducted by the institute.
Scholarship
IIT Kharagpur offers various scholarships to support its students financially. Merit-cum-Means scholarships are available for undergraduate students from economically weaker sections, providing tuition fee waivers and stipends based on academic performance and family income. Additionally, several government scholarships cater to reserved categories, including SC, ST, and OBC students, offering financial assistance to promote inclusive education. The institute also facilitates scholarships for differently-abled students and those excelling in sports or extracurricular activities.
